Takeaways from a Recent Inspection
Here are a few observations noted by an FDA inspector during an inspection of a licensed medicated facility.
- Training – the inspector checked the training records for a recently hired employee. Training records were present, but the inspector noted that the employee had spent some time in the mill training prior to receiving Food Safety and Personal Hygiene training.
Reminder – be sure to perform Animal Food Safety and Hygiene training prior to an employee performing any tasks in the mill involving the handling of animal food or animal food ingredients. This video from Kansas State University is a great resource for this training.
- Waste – Drums used for waste feed and trash were not labeled.
Reminder – label all barrels and drums regarding the contents to prevent accidental rework of the material or cross contamination.
- Bags observed without the expiration date and/or lot number.
Reminder – Instruct employees to maintain the lot # and expiration dates when cutting open bags.
- Uncovered receiving pits.
Reminder – Receiving pits should be covered when ingredients are not being received. This is especially important when the facility is closed for business.
- Connections for liquid ingredient tanks not labeled.
Reminder – Make sure connection points are identified to prevent the ingredient from being put into the wrong tank.
